Earlier this year, Alberta Views magazine partnered with the ABMI on the What Does Biodiversity Mean to You? essay contest. We were delighted to receive entries from writers of all ages and backgrounds from across our province, and were inspired to read about the many ways biodiversity matters to Albertans. The staff of Alberta Views magazine took on the difficult task of selecting* a winner, which—drumroll, please!—we’re pleased to announce today:
Winner: Spice of Life, by Billie Milholland. Billie receives a prize of $500 and will be published in the Spring 2021 issue of Alberta Views, which focusses on stories and issues related to Alberta’s environment.
Runners-up: The Birch Bark Berry Basket, by Andrea Johancsik and Biodiversity in the River Valley, by Eric Shapiro. Andrea and Eric will each receive a prize of $250.
Honourable mention (youth category): The Home of the Animals, by Danica Skrzekowski (age 7). Danica will receive a $50 Chapters gift card.
The ABMI will be coordinating the promotion of these stories with Alberta Views’ publication timelines. Stay tuned for more details in a future blog post/ABMI e-newsletter.
Congratulations to our winners and many thanks to all our entrants for sharing their stories! Thanks also to Alberta Views for their partnership and adjudication. Alberta VIews has kindly extended its subscription offer to ABMI readers—visit albertaviews.ca and use code ABMI20 to get your annual subscription for only $20.00.
